Flaming Lips Nell Smith Car Accident: Fernie, BC, Protege and singer died at 17

Nell Smith Fernie, British Columbia, Flaming Lips Protege and singer, has sadly died. It has been announced on several Facebook pages that she died in a tragic accident. A Facebook post made the following statements, “The music world is grappling with devastating news as Nell Smith, a rising talent in the industry, has tragically passed away following a road accident. At just 17 years old, the singer and songwriter, known for her collaboration with The Flaming Lips and her deeply evocative music, leaves behind a legacy that touched countless lives…”

At the time of this report her funeral arrangements and obituary has not been announced by her family. Please keep his father, Jude Smith and other family member in your loving thoughts and prayers.

Nell Smith, was a musician from Fernie, appeared in a documentary series Out There, which follows young Canadians who succeeded in tiny towns during the connected digital era. Five youngsters from isolated and rural areas in British Columbia and Alberta are followed as they follow their passions and aspirations in a video series which featured Nell Smith.

Smith believed that having an internet presence and starting her career in a small community have allowed her greater freedom and facilitated her ability to network with other artists. Her second album, which will be out later this year, was produced in collaboration with the local band Shred Kelly.

She did, however, added that having a public character and living in a small place hasn’t been easy, leading to pressure to maintain a specific image and a lack of anonymity. “My first album was a huge deal for me, and I consider myself very fortunate to have had the opportunity.” It just blew out and there was a lot of publicity and attention from it and it was fairly overwhelming a lot of time,” she said. “People recognize me. That’s just part of living in a small town, I suppose,” she continued.

In the song “Anxiety,” from her new album, she explored the challenges that came with constantly being in the spotlight. She intended to concentrate more on her music after high school and has set her sights on a Canadian tour, which will take place at the end of the month of march, 2024.
